Hand and finger fractures
Finger alignment matters as much as bone healing.
01
What it is
Metacarpal and phalangeal fractures can affect grip and coordination. Finger rotation particularly matters for function.
02
Symptoms
Pain, swelling or deformity after injury needs examination. An open wound over a fracture requires urgent care.
03
Assessment
Finger alignment, tendons, sensation and X-rays are assessed. Do not attempt to correct a deformity at home.
04
Non-surgical treatment
Some stable fractures are protected with a splint or other immobilisation. Follow-up checks that alignment is maintained.
05
When surgery is considered
Displacement, rotation, instability or joint involvement may justify fixation suited to the fracture pattern.
06
Recovery and follow-up
Recovery aims to restore tendon gliding and movement while bone heals. Stiffness may require hand therapy.
Frequently asked questions
Does movement rule out a fracture?
No. Some fractures still allow movement.
Why does one finger cross another?
Rotation may be abnormal and needs review.
Are screws always needed?
No. Protection or different fixation methods may be appropriate.
When can I write?
It depends on stability, pain and required protection.
Can I play sport in a splint?
This depends on sport and fracture; a splint does not remove all risk.
Why is the finger stiff?
Bone, joint and soft tissues recover at different rates.
