Distal radius fracture
A broken wrist needs a plan for alignment, stability and function.
01
What it is
This fracture affects the end of the radius near the wrist, often after a fall. It may involve the joint surface and associated injuries.
02
Symptoms
Pain, swelling, bruising or deformity can occur. An open wound, cold or pale fingers, marked sensory loss or severe increasing pain requires urgent care.
03
Assessment
Examination checks circulation, sensation and finger movement alongside X-rays. CT may help assess complex joint fractures and plan treatment.
04
Non-surgical treatment
Some fractures are managed with reduction and immobilisation, with checks to ensure alignment is maintained. Stability, displacement and functional needs guide decisions.
05
When surgery is considered
Surgery is considered when acceptable alignment and stability cannot be achieved or maintained. Plates, screws or other fixation may be used. Risks include stiffness, tendon or nerve injury and infection.
06
Recovery and follow-up
Finger movement and wrist or forearm exercises are tailored to the injury. Bone healing and functional recovery progress differently. A low-energy fracture may prompt a bone health assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Does every fracture need a plate?
No. Some maintain acceptable alignment with immobilisation and follow-up.
Can I load the wrist immediately after surgery?
Not routinely. Fixation may allow selected movement, while loading depends on stability and healing.
Why repeat X-rays after casting?
To check that alignment is maintained. Some fractures displace during recovery.
Should my fingers move during recovery?
Movement of permitted joints is usually encouraged to limit stiffness, within the restrictions for your injury.
Is the plate always removed?
No. Removal is considered for symptoms, tendon concerns or another indication and requires another operation.
Which symptoms need urgent attention?
Cold or pale fingers, new sensory loss, severe increasing pain or a very tight cast require immediate assessment.
