Wrist arthritis and replacement

Relieving pain while considering how much movement can be preserved.

01

What it is

Arthritis can cause pain and restricted movement. Replacement substitutes damaged joint surfaces in selected patients.

02

Symptoms

Pain with loading, stiffness and difficulty with daily tasks guide assessment. X-rays are interpreted alongside symptoms.

03

Assessment

Bone, tendons, stability and functional demand are assessed. Heavy work and expected loading influence choice.

04

Non-surgical treatment

Splints, activity changes and other measures may relieve symptoms. Surgery is considered for persistent meaningful limitation.

05

When surgery is considered

Replacement aims to relieve pain while retaining some motion. Fusion and other procedures are alternatives. Implant risks include loosening, wear, instability and revision.

06

Recovery and follow-up

Replacement needs protection and long-term load adaptation. It does not create a normal wrist or permit unrestricted effort.

Frequently asked questions

Replacement or wrist fusion?

Anatomy and needs guide choice. Fusion sacrifices motion; replacement has load and durability limitations.

Is it suitable for heavy work?

High loading demands may favour another solution.

How long does it last?

There is no guaranteed individual lifespan. Follow-up is necessary.

Will all motion return?

Not usually. Treatment balances pain, useful motion and stability.

Can I play sport?

Sport type, impacts and fall risk need assessment.

What happens if it fails?

The cause and options for revision or an alternative procedure are assessed.
