DR. DANIEL AEDO MARTÍN · MADRID

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis

Pain on the thumb side when lifting, turning the wrist or picking up a child.

01

What it is

Two thumb tendons pass through a narrow wrist compartment. Restricted gliding can cause pain. The condition may occur during pregnancy or after childbirth, as well as at other times.

02

Symptoms

Pain lies on the thumb side of the wrist and may worsen when lifting or moving the thumb. Swelling can occur.

03

Assessment

History and examination usually guide diagnosis. There is no need to provoke pain with home tests. Ultrasound or other imaging is considered when findings are unclear.

04

Non-surgical treatment

Changes to painful activities, a splint or an injection may help. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and other relevant circumstances are considered when choosing treatment.

05

When surgery is considered

Persistent, limiting symptoms may warrant release of the tendon compartment. Nearby sensory nerve branches are protected during surgery. Risks include altered sensation, scar discomfort or tendon instability.

06

Recovery and follow-up

Return to tasks depends on symptoms and treatment. Repeated lifting has different demands from writing or eating. Recovery planning focuses on the activities you need.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as thumb arthritis?

No. De Quervain’s affects tendons; thumb base arthritis affects a joint.

Should I stretch forcefully?

Avoid deliberately provoking severe pain. Exercises, when appropriate, are tailored to recovery.

Can it start after childbirth?

Yes. Pregnancy, the postnatal period and repeated baby-care tasks are considered when adapting treatment.

Which splint do I need?

An indicated splint should protect the relevant structures and fit well. Not every wrist support controls thumb movement equally.

When is surgery considered?

When symptoms remain limiting despite appropriate care or specific circumstances justify it. Duration alone does not decide.

Can I keep caring for my baby?

Treatment planning should include adapted grips, shared lifting and help after any procedure. Discuss these needs at your appointment.
